20th September 1949: To Kilburn (Yorkshire)… “got further ideas for painting of ‘White Horse’. Some trees in the foreground, and paint it broadly on a large scale. Mostly grey but a bit flat like a wall painting.”

Richard's daughter Caroline remarked on seeing the gallery opening photo below:
I remember this large picture of the white horse. For a while it hung in my bedroom at Appletreewick, next to my bed, and I often banged my head on its frame!
