This drawing has been known as "The Grandfather" for decades, but we think it may have started its journey as one of the paintings in Richard's first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in London in 1929. We have made a guess that it could be entry no.8 in the exhibition catalogue, "The Three Ages". The date, style and quality of the drawing certainly matches many of the other drawings in the show. If you click the Goupil link below you will see a list of all the titles in the catalogue. We suspect that several of the drawings had one name in the catalogue but have become known by another.

"The Three Ages" was bought at the Goupil Gallery show by Sir Michael Sadler along with A Fairy Tale, Clowns by the Sea,  Lady with a Lute and The Family. Richard received £35 for the lot, according to his sales diary.

About the same time Sadler also bought The Pool in the Wood, which he gifted to The Cooper Gallery in 1933.
