Richard's 1932 diary mentions that one day he walked along the coast to Beer in Devon, about six miles from Lyme Regis where he was staying while finishing off the paintings for his 1933 Dorset Sea-Ports exhibition. He seems to have done several paintings from the sketches made that day.

This work has been known as 'Moored Fishing Boats at Beer' [Offer Waterman & Co, and Bridgeman Art Library], but we are going to guess that it is the same work as Beer from the Sea (since the sizes match) which was listed in the catalogue to the Dorset Sea-Ports show [Cat 40]. There were two other paintings of Beer in the same show - Street in Beer [Cat 25] and The Beach, Beer [Cat 18].

Beer Head (1933), is mentioned in his 1933 diary but does not appear in any exhibition catalogue we have found, so it may be another title for one of the works above.
