At the Retrospective Show of R.E.'s work at the Cartwright Hall Bradford, the writer J.B. Priestley opened the proceedings. R.E. wrote in his diary:

"JB said it was the most impressive one man show he had seen for years. At the end I presented him with a pipe...  He purchased the little Angry Clown saying 'That's what we all are.' "
