This work is the study for one of two murals Richard was commissioned to do in the early 1960s to hang in the entrance and waiting area of the newly built Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield - "Whitby, North Yorkshire to Represent Sheffield at Play" (1960-61) and "Chatsworth to Represent Sheffield at Play" (1961).

He started the project by painting studies for both murals "Whitby, Study for a Mural in the Teaching Hosptial, Sheffield"(1960) and "Chatsworth, Study for a Mural in the Teaching Hospital, Sheffield" (1960).

The murals were removed from the building some years ago because of redevelopment plans. At the moment (2020) they are being held in store until suitable display places can be found for them.

The present work is a study for Richard Eurich’s first mural commission for the Teaching Hospital, Sheffield (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital). Although highly finished, this study bears notations, squaring, and a few stray pencil marks. His daughter, Caroline, who was an art student at the time, remembers assisting her father in squaring this work for transfer. Eurich had a special fondness for Whitby, which appeared more than once in his works. He has here taken an unusual high vantage point over the town and harbour and flattened the picture plane in a similar way to his earlier painting ‘Gay Lane’.
