Richard records in his sales diary that this work was sold to a person unknown by the Goupil Gallery in 1937. Another record puts it with the director of the Goupil, Mrs Marchant. Richard had known Mrs Marchant since the days of his first solo show at the Goupil in 1929, but perhaps she did not tell him the she was the buyer?
