There is a note in Richard's sales diary that this work was bought by the Ministry of Works, but we have no other record to confirm if it was nor when. If it was in the Government Art Collection for a while, why did it come back into private ownership?

Four Palmerston seaforts were built across the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight around 1860. They were designed, along with other land based forts, to protect the Royal Navy port of Portsmouth from a perceived threat from the French navy.

The seaforts were the main subject in a number of Richard's paintings, and an incidental subject in a few others. See the links below to the other works.
