Cars could drive up as far as this fence and park, usually facing the sea. People sat there in all weathers watching the light change over the water, either there for a walk or to sit and calm their emotions and possibly doze! The open rubbish bin took Dad’s eye and it appears in a couple of other pictures. The Solent is a slither of light between the beach and the sky and the headland of the Isle of Wight beyond.
