Landscape with Cows

This was probably glimpsed momentarily from a train window on one of Richard’s journeys from London back to Southampton. His practised visual memory enabled him to recreate that magic hour when the sloping sun lights a landscape with an unusual intensity and warmth before it fades. There is an urgency in the quality of the paint and the shorthand blobs are convincing cows. I love the daring with which he has painted a thin wash of dark red over the further green field to plunge it into shadow.
