Beaulieu is only a couple of miles from Dibden Purlieu where we lived. The road is straight across the flat moor (cycling into a head wind could be tiring!) though here Dad appears to make the road rise a bit. In the 80s the road was surfaced with pale grit which gives it this light sandy colour. In a hot summer there was frequently a mirage shimmering here like water but Dad saw it this time with a patch of fog on an otherwise clear stretch and was amused by the sight. I love the dumpy toy-like cars negotiating this hazard.- PB
