When I see one of my father's paintings dated 1973 I immediately associate it with what was happening in my life. My 2nd son was born in March that year and my young husband died in the same month. We had just moved from Switzerland to Yorkshire and I was thrown entirely onto the unquestioning warmth and generosity of my parents. This painting has an emotional intensity about it which might reflect the huge upheaval to their settled way of life that I was responsible for. The other picture that arouses a similar emotion for me and painted in 1973 is Snow Shower over Skyreholme with the poignant touch of the gold finch perched momentarily on the dry stone wall.

For one of Richard's daughters there is an emotional connection between 'The Epiphany' and 'Snow Shower over Skyreholme'. See comment above.
