- REP/PCThe title subject is dead centre of the picture, and yet if I had been composing a name for the painting I’d probably have referred to the human figures. Yet, when your attention is drawn to the sail you realise how it shines out at you like a light. But the figures are strangely flat and the tall man weirdly elongated with his child draped awkwardly against him. This is one of the earliest examples I have come across where he uses pencil as well as oil paint which contributes to the overall flatness and the second where he has used figures in this monumental fashion.
