Richard got the idea of this painting after seeing the photo (below) in a newspaper. The caption read:

Fife and drum, suspended from the left hand thumb, provide the music for the exotic Quetzal dance, named after the richly plumed South American bird of that name, and performed at the Theatre of Nations, Paris, by the National Mexican folklore Ballet.
