This picture shows Eurich launching himself into the hottest of palettes. This is a voyage of discovery after 60 years of using relatively cool colours. In fact there are several paintings around this decade where he is experimenting with contrast and vibrancy, letting these colours float with the minimum of drawing (cf list of pictures). This is a step away from one hero, Christopher Wood, towards another: JMW Turner. Here the grouped figures give weight to the shore and the two wheeling birds a focus inside the halo of fiery light on the turbulent sea.- PB
