RE painted this picture of his wife Mavis in 1936 but cut it down two years later and re-dated it.

Entry from RE diary: Nov 25 - 12 Dec 1936 -"Portrait of Mavis in hundred year old dress with lace collar and cuffs. 40 x 18 in."

The portrait as it is now is about half the original height, 53 cm instead of 101.6 cm.

Usually called 'Her Grandmother's Dress', this in fact is a portrait of the artist's wife, Mavis Pope, dressed up in some old Victorian clothes which came from a second-hand shop previously occupying the Redfern Gallery's premises.
