This drawing anticipates Richard's painting Episode at Lyme Regis done many years later in 1951. He picked up the story while painting in Lyme Regis for his 1933 show in London. St. Veronica took pity on Christ carrying the cross and lent him her veil so he could wipe his face. When he returned it to her, the image of his face was miraculously imprinted on it.
Finding a mention of a 1932 painting about the legend raises some questions. There is no record of another RE work about the St. Veronica story, so is the painting mentioned by Richard in the letter one that was never completed or lost, or did he rework the 1932 painting in 1951 to created the work we know of?
