This is one of a series of pictures that Dad painted when he and Mum used to visit her old friend ‘Steve’ (Dr Frances Stevens, who was an Education lecturer at Leeds University). They met at Southlands Training College in Wimbledon where Mum taught before she married. When Steve retired, she built a house on a patch of land she inherited near the mouth of Plymouth Sound. There were amazing views out to Eddystone Lighthouse as well as across the breakwater and towards Plymouth itself. Dad would make little sketches and then work on the paintings back at home. This looks down onto the Military Camp directly below the house and across the water with a hint of sunset in the quality of light.
