- REP / PCThe works that Richard showed in exhibitions in 1927 got some press coverage which inspired a friend of his to write a short article about him in the February 1928 issue of Studio magazine. 'Harlequins' was used to illustrate the piece. We are not sure if it was in any of the exhibitions.
Richard came to regret a line in the article quoted without his permission from a private letter - "I am trying to unlearn what I learnt in schools". A little while after the piece was published he bumped by chance into Tonks, his old teacher at the Slade. Tonks had read the article and declared indirectly he had been a bit hurt by it. Richard explained that it was "A typically foolish remark which students who are trying their wings like to make." Tonks seemed to accept that.
