Shell and Post Office Commissions

The paintings for Shell were unusual in that they were commissioned for reproduction in calendars and other promotional materials rather than for the paintings themselves. The same is true of the Post Office poster which urged people to use the newly introduced postcodes (Richmond in Yorkshire could be confused with Richmond in Middlesex).

Caithness

Caithness (1961)

oil on board - 31.5h x 41.5w (cm)

This lively picture is rich with imagery associated with North Scotland. Shell gave Richard a list of items to include in his composition and he has managed to make it seem remarkably natural and at the same time give it dramatic atmosphere.

Richmond, Yorkshire

Richmond, Yorkshire (1958)

oil on canvas - 61h x 51w (cm)

Richard knew Richmond well and here, so the story goes, he incorporated a back view of his son Crispin looking at a map and the scene spread below him from the top of the church tower. The Post Office commissioned the painting to encourage people to use the new Postcode to help avoid confusion.
